Conclusion

Conclusion

For those new to the country, it’s easy to overlook essential information about Canada’s rental market. For example, tenants in many provinces have strong protections under local rental regulations, yet without knowledge of these rights, they may not fully benefit from them.

To help you navigate the rental process smoothly, TTN immigration has put together a brief guide highlighting the key points every newcomer should understand before renting a home in Canada.

1. Rent Control

In certain provinces, rent control regulations are in place to limit both the timing and the amount by which a landlord can increase rent. By considering these regulations when selecting a property, you may save money over time. However, if rent control does not apply to your property, it’s wise to budget for potentially larger rent increases at renewal.

The table below outlines rent control details across applicable provinces:

The province

Rent increase caps (2024, 2025)

Additional restrictions

Exemptions to rent control

British Columbia

2024 rent increase limit: 3.5%

2025 rent increase limit: 3%

Rent increases are permitted only once every 12 months.

Landlords must give a 3-month notice before raising rent.

Increases in utilities and other fees require the tenant’s consent.

Manitoba

2024 rent increase guideline: 3%

2025 rent increase guideline: 1.1% economic adjustment factor

The rent increase guideline applies to most rental units.

Exemptions include high-rent units and government-owned properties.

Ontario

Giới hạn tăng tiền thuê năm 2024: 2.5%

Giới hạn tăng tiền thuê năm 2025: 2,5%

Note: Rent control policies apply only to residential buildings first built or occupied before November 15, 2018.

Rent increases are permitted only once every 12 months.

A minimum of 90 days’ written notice is required for any rent increase.

Exceptions to rent control include newly constructed buildings and most newly created basement apartments.

Prince Edward Island

2024 rent increase guideline: 3%

2025 rent increase guideline: To be set annually by the Director of Residential Tenancy

Rent increases are allowed once per year.

Landlords must give a 3-month notice before raising rent.

Any rent increase above the allowable limit requires an application to the Rental Office.

Currently, no other provinces or territories have rent control policies. In areas without rent control, landlords can typically raise the rent to any amount once your lease ends or is up for renewal.

2. End of Lease/Evictions

Before signing a lease, consider the following:

Whether your lease will automatically renew or if you’ll need to vacate when it ends.

The required notice period to terminate your lease (for a month-to-month lease).

Actions or wrongdoings that could lead to eviction by your landlord.

Circumstances in which your landlord can evict you without any fault on your part.

The factors mentioned above depend on your lease agreement and the relevant provincial regulations.

For a fixed-term lease, you will be required to vacate the property at the end of the lease term. However, in some provinces like Ontario, your lease will automatically convert to a month-to-month agreement unless you inform the landlord that you plan to leave.

For month-to-month leases, you typically need to provide one month’s notice before ending the lease. In Prince Edward Island and Ontario, a notice period of two months or 60 days (whichever is longer) is required.

Under certain circumstances, you may be evicted, meaning the landlord can terminate your lease even if you do not want to move out.

The reasons a landlord can terminate your lease will depend on both provincial laws and the terms of your lease agreement. Generally, landlords can evict tenants for failing to meet their obligations or for misconduct, such as:

Non-payment of rent

Property damage

Breaching lease terms

Health and safety violations

Disrupting the enjoyment of other tenants

There are also situations where a landlord can evict you for reasons beyond your control, which can vary by province. Common examples include:

The landlord wants to sell the property.

The landlord needs the property for personal use.

The building is set to be demolished.

The building is no longer safe to live in.

In these cases, landlords must provide written notice with the eviction date. Tenants have the right to challenge lease terminations through local tenancy boards or tribunals, with the process differing by province and local housing authority.

3. How much should I expect to spend?

Your rental costs will largely depend on the property and its location. Below is a table showing the median monthly rent for bachelor, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom apartments in major cities (source: Zumper.com).

City

Bachelor/Studio apartment

1-bedroom apartment

2-bedroom apartment

Toronto (ON)

$1,900

$2,335

$2,969

Vancouver (BC)

$2,315

$2,650

$3,650

Calgary (AB)

$1,599

$1,790

$2,297

Edmonton (AB)

$1,154

$1,389

$1,650

Winnipeg (MB)

$931

$1,325

$1,725

Montréal (QC)

$1,487

$1,700

$2,195

Beware of Condo By-Laws

You aspire to work and live in Canada, allowing your children to access free education in an international, multicultural environment. After that, you hope your family can stay permanently and eventually become Canadian residents. Honestly, this isn’t usually a quick or easy process, unlike the slick ads might suggest—it requires time and effort. However, the results are undoubtedly worth it for you and your family. And… currently, you’re not sure where to start? Consider the following steps to get started.

1. Identify Your Goals

“Why do you want to live in Canada?” Answer this question sincerely yourself. Each family has unique circumstances and needs, so it’s essential to gather as much information as possible to understand the advantages and challenges of life in Canada. Compare these insights with your family’s values, lifestyle, and aspirations to envision what life in Canada might be like.

Every place has its joys and challenges, and Canada is no exception. While there may be ups and downs, there’s no denying Canada remains among the top countries in the world with a high quality of life, a beautiful natural environment, and a welcoming, inclusive society. Canada is known for its diverse and open immigration policies that attract people from all over the globe. If the positives of Canadian life inspire you, then prepare to overcome any obstacles along the way to reach your goal.

2. Find A Job

The next and most crucial factor in securing your place to live and work in Canada is finding employment. A job not only provides the income needed to live comfortably in Canada, but it’s also a key requirement to obtain permission to come to Canada and bring your family along. When exploring Canadian job boards, you’ll find many attractive job listings, with several matching your skills and experience from Vietnam. You feel confident in your abilities; however, you may ultimately find yourself disappointed.

Since most companies in Canada are not allowed to hire foreign nationals directly, they usually require candidates to already hold a “work permit,” which generally means the applicant must already be in Canada. Foreigners are only recruited in high-demand sectors or urgent labor shortages as determined by the government or within certain Vietnamese businesses that have been unable to find local talent in Canada. Therefore, you need to target companies authorized to hire candidates outside Canada and look for roles that match your skills and experience from Vietnam.

In Canada, industries often reflect the demographics and unique strengths of various cultural communities. This isn’t due to government policy, but rather community-based practices where individuals support each other within specific trades. As a result, you’ll notice that certain communities have a strong presence in specific sectors. For example, Vietnamese workers are frequently welcomed in Canada’s Vietnamese and Asian culinary sectors, the nail industry, and various roles within Vietnamese-owned businesses.

When applying, you’ll follow a similar process to job applications in Vietnam: submit documents, attend interviews, and provide proof of qualifications and experience. Since you’re moving to a new country, it’s also important to present evidence of English or French language proficiency and have sufficient financial resources to support yourself initially. You can search job portals for suitable roles or contact reputable immigration consulting firms with a long-standing record in Canada to help connect you with well-matched, secure job opportunities that will support a smooth transition and successful integration into Canadian life.

An interesting benefit is that once you obtain a “work permit,” your spouse is eligible to join you in Canada on an “Open Work Permit.” This permit allows your spouse to work in any job they choose across Canada, offering the freedom to apply for roles on job sites and seek out excellent employment and income opportunities.

3. Plan Your Immigration

At this stage, it’s essential to understand that having a job in Canada does not guarantee permanent residency. If you do not have a clear goal and a well-defined residency plan from the beginning, you might still need to leave Canada once your work permit expires.

Therefore, if you aim to settle in Canada from the start, you should confirm whether the job you’re applying for is on the list of eligible occupations for immigration. Additionally, identify which provinces have programs that align with your qualifications and offer favorable conditions for your chosen field. You’ll need a clear understanding of the pathway to permanent residency for the program you’ve chosen. Finally, make sure your English proficiency is adequate for your selected occupation.

Once you’re in Canada, you’ll realize how essential an English certification (like IELTS, PTE, or CELPIP) can be for the immigration process. Many occupations don’t require an English certification, but having one will greatly boost your confidence. Given that learning English takes considerable time and effort, it’s best to focus on it in Vietnam during the job application process and while waiting for your work permit approval.

TTN Immigration hopes you always have a clear understanding of your goals and plans, as well as the important matters to consider before arriving in Canada. This will help ensure that your life here is as smooth and fulfilling as you desire.
For candidates applying to the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), eligible work experience must fall under one of four National Occupation Classification (NOC) TEER categories: TEER 0, TEER 1, TEER 2 or TEER 3. The work must meet the following conditions:

Be in the same NOC as the job listed on your application for Express Entry.

Be paid work (either wages or commission), not volunteer or unpaid internship.

Involve performing the duties outlined in the lead statement and the essential duties in the NOC description.

Include at least 1 year of continuous full-time work (1,560 hours), within the last 10 years.

Candidates can meet the 1,560-hour requirement through:

Full-time work (30 hours per week for 12 months).

Equivalent part-time work (e.g., 15 hours per week for 2 years).

Full-time work at more than one job, as long as the hours add up to 1,560.

It’s important to note that hours worked over 30 per week are not counted for part-time employment.

Students can count work experience gained during their studies toward the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) if they meet the following conditions:

The work was paid through wages or commission.

The work was continuous, without any employment gaps.

All other eligibility criteria for the FSWP are fulfilled.

These provisions allow certain student work to contribute towards the FSWP’s minimum eligibility requirements.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

For Canadian Experience Class (CEC)'s eligibility, candidates must have gained at least one year of skilled work experience, whether part-time or full-time. The work must align with the following National Occupational Classification (NOC) TEER categories:

Compensation: Experience must be paid (either wages or commission); volunteer roles or unpaid internships are not considered.

Ineligible Work Experience: Self-employed roles and work completed while a full-time student do not qualify for CEC.

Special provisions for physicians

Self-employed foreign national physicians invited to apply for Canadian permanent residency through Express Entry on or after April 25, 2023, may be temporarily exempt from the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) restrictions on self-employment. This exemption applies to physicians with experience in “providing publicly funded medical services in Canada.”

These CEC applicants should omit selecting the “self-employed work” option under the “work experience in Canada” section in their Express Entry profile to ensure this experience qualifies as Canadian work experience.

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Work With Compensation: Performed work must have been paid, in exchange for wages or earned commission (ex. volunteer work and unpaid internships do not count towards FSTP eligibility).

Note:In order for any work experience to be eligible under the FSTP, the immigration candidate must have been qualified to independently practice the trade occupation during this time. Otherwise, the individual’s FSTP application will be refused.

Canada provides a variety of settlement services to help newcomers integrate into their communities and succeed both personally and professionally. These services are designed to facilitate the transition to Canadian society, focusing on critical areas like employment, language training, housing, healthcare, and community engagement. Settlement services are generally free and confidential, and are often delivered through local community organizations such as multicultural societies, libraries, or neighborhood houses. Many organizations offer support in your first language (mother tongue), in addition to services in English and French.

However, to access these services, newcomers may need to meet specific eligibility requirements, which vary depending on the type of support needed and individual circumstances. To determine if you qualify for settlement services, it’s recommended to visit the organization’s website or contact them directly for more information on how they can assist you or your family members.

1. Language Training

A critical service offered to newcomers is language training in English or French, Canada’s two official languages. Programs like Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) are government-funded and available across the country, providing courses that help improve language skills, which are vital for work, education, and daily life in Canada. Many community centers, colleges, and immigrant service organizations provide additional language courses with a focus on workplace communication and specific fields like healthcare or technology.

2. Employment Services

Employment services are crucial for helping newcomers find jobs that match their skills and qualifications. Settlement agencies assist with job searches, resume writing, interview preparation, and sometimes offer career counseling to help navigate Canada’s job market. Many services also connect newcomers with mentors in their fields to help build professional networks.

3. Housing Assistance

Finding appropriate housing can be a challenge for newcomers, especially in major urban centers where rent prices are high. Many organizations offer housing services that help newcomers understand their rights as tenants, find affordable housing options, and guide them through the rental process.

4. Healthcare Navigation

Canada has a publicly funded healthcare system, but it can be complex to navigate for those unfamiliar with it. Settlement services help newcomers understand how to apply for a health card, find family doctors, and access healthcare services covered under provincial health plans.

5. Educational Support

For newcomers with children, understanding the education system is a priority. Many settlement organizations provide information about enrolling children in school, understanding the curriculum, and accessing additional educational support for students with specific needs. They may also offer adult education programs, including credential recognition services for those with international qualifications.

6. Legal and Financial Guidance

Settlement services often include guidance on legal and financial matters, helping newcomers understand the Canadian tax system, open bank accounts, and get legal advice related to immigration, employment rights, and tenant laws. Financial literacy programs are also offered to help newcomers manage their finances effectively in a new environment.

7. Community Engagement and Social Services

Settling in a new country can be isolating, which is why many services focus on community building and social support. Programs that encourage social engagement, cultural adaptation, and mental health support are widely available, helping newcomers feel a sense of belonging in their new communities. Cultural orientation programs, newcomer networks, and recreational activities can help newcomers adjust to life in Canada and meet others in similar situations.

8. Specialized Services for Refugees

Refugees receive specialized settlement support, including financial assistance, trauma counseling, and tailored programs to help them rebuild their lives in Canada. These services are designed to meet the unique needs of refugees, often involving more intensive support to assist with housing, healthcare, and legal issues.

1. Tailor Your Resume for the Canadian Job Market

To land a job in Canada, your resume must align with the expectations of local employers. A clear, concise, and well-structured resume is key to making a strong first impression. Understanding the differences between Canadian resumes and those from other countries is essential.

Length: Keep your resume between 1-2 pages. If you have less than 10 years of experience, aim for one page.

Achievements over Duties: Focus on quantifiable accomplishments rather than just listing job duties. For example, say “Managed a team of 10, improving efficiency by 15%” instead of “Managed a team.”

No Personal Information: Avoid including photos, age, or marital status, as these are not required in Canada.

Keywords Matter: Use relevant keywords from the job posting to ensure your resume passes Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

Customizing Your Resume for Each Job Application

Rather than sending the same resume to every employer, tailoring it for each specific job greatly improves your chances of landing an interview. Customize your resume by:

Highlighting relevant skills: Emphasize the skills and experience that match the job description.

Using industry-specific language: Adjust the terminology to reflect Canadian industry standards.

Adding relevant certifications: Include any qualifications, especially those recognized in Canada, to boost your credibility.

How to Write a Strong Resume Objective/Personal Statement

Begin your resume with a brief, impactful objective or personal statement that quickly introduces who you are and what you aim to achieve. This is your opportunity to grab the employer’s attention immediately. A strong example might be:

“Results-driven marketing professional with 5+ years of digital marketing experience, specializing in SEO and content creation. Eager to help a dynamic Canadian company grow by leveraging a proven ability to boost organic traffic by 50%.”

This concise overview highlights your skills and showcases your potential contribution to the employer.

Including Volunteer Experience on Your Resume

In Canada, volunteer experience is highly regarded and can be just as valuable as paid work, especially for newcomers. If you’ve volunteered, make sure to include it on your resume. Highlight the skills you gained and connect them to the job you’re applying for. This shows employers how your volunteer work has helped you develop relevant abilities for the role.

2. Build a Professional Network in Your Field

In Canada, networking is a key element of the job search process. Many positions are secured through referrals and professional connections, rather than public job postings. For newcomers, the idea of networking may seem overwhelming, but it's a crucial step towards landing your first job.

Why Networking Matters

Networking not only opens doors to job opportunities that aren’t publicly advertised, but it also allows you to form meaningful relationships with professionals who can provide guidance, mentorship, and support throughout your career.

A strong network can:

Give you access to job leads before they’re announced.

Provide valuable insights into your target industry or role.

Connect you directly with employers or key decision-makers.

Where to Network in Canada

Expanding your professional network in Canada is essential for career growth. Here are some effective ways to do it:

Professional Associations: Join industry-specific associations. For instance, if you're an engineer, consider Engineers Canada. If you're in finance, look into the CFA Society. These organizations offer networking opportunities, events, and resources tailored to your field.

Networking Events: Attend local networking events, career fairs, and expos, which are frequently held in Canadian cities. These events are great for meeting employers and professionals in your industry.

Online Platforms: LinkedIn is a key networking tool in Canada. Make sure to create a strong profile, engage with relevant content, and connect with professionals in your area of expertise.

Informational Interviews: Reach out to professionals in your field for informational interviews. While not a formal job interview, this allows you to learn more about the industry and establish meaningful connections.

How to Build Meaningful Relationships Through Networking

Successful networking is about creating authentic connections, not just asking for favors. When you attend events or reach out to professionals, keep these tips in mind:

Be Prepared: Have a clear and concise elevator pitch—a brief introduction of who you are, your background, and what you’re seeking.

Ask Questions: Show genuine interest in the other person’s career and experiences. Asking thoughtful questions helps make a lasting positive impression.

Follow Up: After connecting with someone, send a short follow-up message thanking them for their time and expressing interest in staying in touch.

Networking takes time, but the relationships you build can lead to lasting career opportunities.

3. Utilize Employment Services, Job Sites, and Job Fairs

As a newcomer to Canada, you have access to a variety of employment services that can help you navigate the job market. The Canadian government offers numerous free resources, while private job sites and career fairs can also provide valuable opportunities.

Government Employment Services

The Canadian government provides a range of employment services designed to connect you with employers, enhance your job search strategies, and offer training programs. Here are some of the most helpful services:

Job Bank: A government-run platform where employers post job openings across Canada. You can create a profile, upload your resume, and apply directly for jobs.

Employment Counseling: Many provinces offer specialized employment counselling for newcomers, assisting with resume building, interview preparation, and connecting with local employers.

Skills Training and Certification Programs: The government also provides training programs that help you acquire the necessary skills and certifications for various jobs in Canada.

Popular Private Job Sites in Canada

In addition to government resources, several private job sites feature open listings across various industries. Here are some of the most popular platforms for finding jobs in Canada:

Indeed.ca: One of the most widely used job search engines, Indeed allows you to search for positions by location, industry, and job type.

LinkedIn: Beyond networking, LinkedIn is a powerful platform where employers actively post job openings. You can apply directly and showcase your professional profile.

Workopolis: A well-established Canadian job site offering listings from multiple industries and regions across the country.

Monster.ca: Another popular job board that serves Canadian job seekers, providing a wide range of job postings across various sectors.

Job Fairs and Career Expos

Attending career fairs is an excellent opportunity to connect with employers in person. Many Canadian cities host both virtual and in-person job fairs where you can:

Discover open positions

Submit your resume directly to hiring managers

Participate in on-the-spot interviews

Network with fellow job seekers and professionals.

Career fairs are especially beneficial in high-demand industries like IT, healthcare, and finance, where skilled professionals are in constant demand.

4. Assess and Validate Your Credentials

One of the biggest challenges newcomers face when seeking employment in Canada is ensuring their qualifications are recognized. Depending on your profession, you may need to have your credentials assessed and validated by a Canadian authority before working in your field.

Understanding Credential Recognition

Credential recognition is the process of evaluating your foreign qualifications to ensure they align with Canadian standards. This step is crucial for regulated professions such as healthcare, engineering, law, and accounting, where specific certifications or licenses are necessary to practice.

Organizations That Can Help with Credential Recognition

The Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials (CICIC) offers valuable resources to help newcomers verify their qualifications. Depending on your profession, you may need to go through one of the following organizations:

Provincial Regulatory Bodies: In regulated professions, each province may have its own regulatory body that evaluates qualifications. For instance, engineers may need to obtain licensure from the Association of Professional Engineers in their province.

Educational Credential Assessment (ECA): For non-regulated professions, an ECA from an organization like World Education Services (WES) helps verify that your foreign degree or diploma is equivalent to a Canadian qualification.

Tips for a Smooth Credential Recognition Process

Start the process early, as assessments can take several months

Keep copies of all your academic transcripts, certificates, and relevant documents

Be prepared for additional testing or coursework if your credentials don’t fully align with Canadian standards

5. Enhance Your Resume with Certifications and Volunteer Work

To stand out in Canada’s competitive job market, consider enhancing your resume with additional certifications and volunteer experience. This not only showcases your commitment to continuous learning but also demonstrates to employers that you are proactive and adaptable.

Pursue Canadian Certifications

Obtaining certifications relevant to your field can significantly boost your profile among job seekers. Many Canadian industries value candidates with recognized credentials that reflect current skills and knowledge. Some popular certifications include:

Project Management Professional (PMP): A globally recognized certification highly regarded in fields like construction, IT, and healthcare.

Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP): This certification showcases expertise in cybersecurity for IT professionals.

First Aid and CPR Certification: Many employers in healthcare, education, and customer service appreciate candidates with first aid and CPR training.

Language Proficiency Tests: If English or French isn’t your first language, completing language proficiency tests like IELTS or CELPIP for English, or TEF Canada for French, can enhance your resume and improve your job prospects.

Gain Canadian Experience Through Volunteering

Volunteering is an effective way to gain Canadian work experience, demonstrate your skills, and show your commitment to the community. Through volunteering, you can:

Develop new skills or refine existing ones

Build a network of contacts who can vouch for your abilities

Familiarize yourself with Canadian workplace culture

You can find volunteer opportunities through platforms like Volunteer Canada or by connecting with local non-profit organizations in your area.

6. Find a Mentor to Guide You

One of the most effective strategies for navigating the Canadian job market is to seek out a mentor who can provide guidance and support. A mentor can help you understand the nuances of your industry, offer valuable career advice, and connect you with new professional opportunities.

Why Mentorship Matters

Mentorship is a common practice in Canada, particularly in professional and business circles. Having a mentor can:

Help you set realistic career goals and develop a strategy to achieve them

Provide insights into industry trends and the skills that are currently in demand

Expand your professional network by introducing you to key contacts

Offer moral support and encouragement throughout your job search journey

How to Find a Mentor

There are various ways to find a mentor in Canada:

Industry Associations: Many professional associations have formal mentorship programs that match newcomers with experienced professionals in the same field.

Networking events: Attend networking events where you can meet potential mentors. Building a natural, professional relationship before asking someone to be your mentor is crucial.

Online Platforms: Use platforms like LinkedIn to connect with industry leaders who might be open to mentorship opportunities.

Building a Strong Mentor-Mentee Relationship

Once you’ve found a mentor, focus on nurturing the relationship by:

Communicating openly and honestly about your career goals and challenges.

Being respectful of their time by preparing thoughtful questions for each meeting.

Following through on their advice and keeping them updated on your progress.

A strong mentor-mentee relationship can be an invaluable asset throughout your career, providing long-term support and guidance.

By tailoring your resume to Canadian standards, actively networking, utilizing employment services, validating your credentials, enhancing your resume with certifications and volunteer work, and seeking mentorship, you can successfully navigate the challenges of the Canadian job market and secure your first job.

Remember, each step you take brings you closer to your goal. Stay proactive in your job search, keep learning, and expand your professional network. Your unique skills and experiences are valuable assets to Canadian employers, and with the right approach, you can build a rewarding career in your new home.

One of the essential tasks upon arriving in Canada for study or work is to take care of paperwork. This includes mandatory documents such as the Social Insurance Number (SIN), Health Care Card, and Bank Account.

Below is a sample schedule and some tips to efficiently complete all the paperwork in a day. This schedule is based on the real experiences of TTN Immigration’s clients in Winnipeg. Those preparing for or newly arriving in Canada can refer to it to ensure a smooth and time-saving process. (The article will be a bit long but will be very detailed and hopefully useful for you.)

After landing in Canada, take a few days to rest while also preparing a few important tasks:

Schedule an appointment with the bank: Opening a bank account in Canada usually requires you to book an appointment in advance. It's best to schedule your bank appointment for the afternoon, between 1 PM and 2 PM, so you have enough time to complete other paperwork in the morning. Booking too early may leave you rushed, while booking too late might not give the bank enough time to address any issues that may arise. If you're not confident in conducting transactions in English, you can contact TTN Immigration for assistance from a Vietnamese-speaking bank representative.

Purchase a bus card (public transportation systems vary by province, so check based on where you live): In Winnipeg, you can buy a Peggo card at 7-Eleven or other nearby convenience stores and load it with funds as needed. Each time you use the bus, simply tap your card on the reader near the driver, with a fare of $2.90, which is cheaper than the regular cash fare of $3.25. Within 1.5 hours of your first tap, you can transfer buses multiple times without additional charges. Use Google Maps to find the right bus stop, and you can easily explore or take care of your paperwork.

Register for a SIM card: Simply visit any nearby phone store (like Bell, Rogers, Lucky Mobile, Public Mobile, or Freedom Mobile) and present your identification to register for a SIM. You can choose a prepaid SIM and pay in cash if you don’t have a payment card yet, or opt for a postpaid SIM to get a phone number immediately without upfront payment. Once you have a bank account, you can pay your SIM bills using your debit or credit card through a mobile app.

Completing paperwork usually takes a full day, but it can also feel like a city tour while you’re at it! Start your paperwork day at 8 AM. The main documents you’ll need to secure are your SIN, Health Card, and bank account. If you have time in the afternoon, consider stopping by the MPI insurance center or a nearby agent (like Auto Pac) to register for the driving theory test if you plan to get your driver’s license soon for driving a car.

SIN (Social Insurance Number): Social Insurance Number is essential for anyone studying or working in Canada. You can apply for your SIN at any Service Canada location near you. A convenient option is the Service Canada office next to the Manitoba Health building (300 Carlton St), which you’ll visit next. Aim to arrive early (around 8:30 AM) to be in the first line. When your number is called, simply provide your identification documents, and the staff will verify them before printing your SIN document. Keep this number secure, and only share it with authorized parties as specified.

Health Card: Next, head to the Manitoba Health building to apply for your Health Card, similar to Vietnam's health insurance. Expect to wait in line, but the process moves fairly quickly. You'll interact with staff twice: first to check your documents (passport, work permit, etc.) and receive a number to sit and wait. This initial stage may take 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the crowd.

When it's your turn, a second staff member will thoroughly review your paperwork, including your tenancy agreement to confirm your address and length of stay, work-related documents, and any marriage or birth certificates if you're applying with family. It's crucial to have all necessary documents ready to avoid disappointment after a long wait. If you need to print additional documents, a nearby Canada Service offers free printing.

Once your paperwork is accepted, ask when to expect your Health Card, which typically arrives in 4 to 7 weeks. Some may choose to apply online for convenience, but be aware that this option can take several months to process. Weigh your options to find what suits you best.

Lunch and rest: It's the perfect time to stroll around the nearby shopping mall, where you can find a food court or restaurants. Expect to spend around $15 for a meal, which usually includes a generous portion and a drink—enough to recharge you for the afternoon ahead!"

Opening a bank account: In the afternoon, you'll head to your appointment to set up a bank account. While waiting, use this time to ask the bank staff for help downloading the banking app, logging in, and making e-transfers, as they might not offer this assistance proactively. Request to have a debit card issued immediately; if not, it will be mailed to you in 10 days to 2 weeks, which can be inconvenient. Additionally, ask about getting a credit card, as this will allow you to spend now and pay later. Regular spending and timely payments can help build your credit score, which will be beneficial for future plans like buying a house or car. Confirm whether your credit card will be mailed or if you'll need to pick it up, and understand how to activate it.

Registering for the driving theory test: While this isn't a requirement for the same day, if you have the time, you can get it done. Head to MPI (Manitoba Public Insurance) or an insurance agent (like Autopac) to present your documents and schedule your theory test. It's a good idea to choose a Saturday for your test, allowing you more flexibility if you have work or school commitments.

Speaking of driving tests in Canada, that's a whole story filled with interesting tips! But this post has gotten long, so TTN Immigration will save that for another day. For now, you've completed a day of essential paperwork. Get ready to work, study, and embrace life in Canada!

For years, international students have been drawn to Canada for its renowned universities, vibrant multicultural environment, and the chance to gain valuable work experience in a new country.

Studying in Canada and acquiring relevant work experience can significantly enhance a student’s chances of obtaining permanent residence (PR) . Graduates from Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) earn additional points in Canada's Express Entry system, boosting their competitiveness in the PR pool.

However, a Canadian education alone does not guarantee permanent residency. Canada provides various pathways for work and settlement after graduation, but eligibility depends on factors such as the candidate's skills, qualifications, and occupation.

Recently, Canada's immigration policies have evolved to better align with labour market needs. Coupled with a highly competitive pool of candidates, transitioning from a study permit to permanent residency can be more challenging.

For international students aiming to make Canada their home, here are some tips to maximize their points and improve their chances successfully obtaining permanent residence.

Stay up to date with changing immigration policy

Immigration policies in Canada can shift in response to the country's economic needs. For international students aiming for permanent residency in the future, staying updated on eligibility criteria for various programs is crucial.

For instance, earlier this year, the Canadian government announced a change affecting international students. Those enrolled in study programs under curriculum licensing agreements will no longer qualify for a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) upon graduation

These programs are offered by private colleges with licenses to deliver the curriculum of associated public colleges, and they often face less oversight compared to programs at public institutions.

Students who plan to gain work experience in Canada through a PGWP should carefully research which study programs are eligible for this permit upon graduation.

2. Choose in-demand professions

In 2023, Canada introduced category-specific Express Entry draws to target occupations and skills that are in high demand. These categories include:

Healthcare

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

Trade

Transport

Agriculture and Agri-food

Students who are still exploring their career options might consider pursuing qualifications in these high-demand fields to enhance their chances in Express Entrydraws. For instance, careers in STEM fields like architecture, engineering, data science, or web development could improve their prospects.

However, it's important to note that these categories can change and do not guarantee permanent residence.

3. Research Provincial Nominee Programs

Every province and territory in Canada, except Quebec and Nunavut, runs Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) to attract skilled workers. If an international student finds their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score insufficient or doesn't qualify for a category-based draw, they might consider exploring provincial nominations.

There are two main pathways for immigrating through a PNP:

Express Entry: This route involves applying through Express Entry, where provinces can award an additional 600 CRS points to eligible candidates, boosting their chances of obtaining permanent residency (PR) through Express Entry.

PNPs: This route involves applying directly through a provincial PNP stream, bypassing Express Entry.

With over 80 different provincial economic streams available, students have a wide range of opportunities to explore for gaining permanent residency through their education and employment in Canada. However, it's important to note that PNP criteria can change based on each province's economic priorities.

4. Improve both language abilities

Canada's two official languages—English and French—offer significant advantages in the process of permanent residence (PR). International students can boost their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score by excelling in their primary language and retaking language tests like IELTS or CELPIP if needed to achieve a higher score.

Additionally, learning French can further enhance a candidate's CRS score and increase their chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA). In 2024, Canada introduced French language proficiency Express Entry draws and this trend is anticipated to continue into 2025 and 2026. To be eligible for these draws, candidates must achieve a minimum score of 7 in all four language abilities (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) on the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadien (NCLC).

How to Convert Language Test Scores to CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark)

Validate all degrees

Canada's Express Entry system values education and awards points based on your academic qualifications. For international students with multiple degrees obtained outside Canada, validating these credentials through designated organizations approved by the Canadian government, such as WES, can be beneficial.

Additionally, pursuing an eligible degree or program within Canada can further enhance your prospects. Studying in Canada not only provides valuable education but also improves your chances in Express Entry, making you a more competitive candidate for permanent residency.

The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) assess proficiency in both English and French. These standards serve as a benchmark index for comparing scores from language tests such as IELTS, CELPIP, PTE, TEF, and TCF. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) utilizes CLB to establish language requirements for immigration programs.

CLB assesses IELTS, CELPIP and PTE scores for English proficiency and TCF and TEF scores for French proficiency. CLB scores range from 1 to 12. A lower CLB score indicates limited ability to communicate and understand English or French, while a higher score indicates greater proficiency in English or French.

CLB for Express Entry Programs

For the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the minimum CLB requirement is 5 or higher. For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, a minimum CLB of 7 is required, with additional points awarded for higher scores. The Federal Skilled Trades Program requires a minimum CLB of 5 in Listening and Speaking, while CLB 4 is required in Reading and Writing. To apply for a study visa under the Direct Student Program or SDS, an applicant needs a minimum CLB score of 7 or 6 bands in each module.

IELTS to CLB Calculator

IELTS, or the International English Language Testing System, administered by IDP International and the British Council worldwide, assesses candidates' English language proficiency. It confirms whether candidates can communicate and understand English and provides scores based on the results of each test component.

To convert IELTS scores to CLB, you can use our free tool or follow the table below, which may be complex. For example, if a candidate's IELTS score is 6 in each module, its equivalent score in CLB will be 7.

Please note that IELTS Academic is NOT sufficient for immigration programs in Canada. IRCC only accepts IELTS General for immigration purposes. If you have taken the IELTS Academic test, you must take the IELTS General training exam.
