Study Abroad

Study permit is a permit issued by IRCC allowing students to study at educational institutions and schools in Canada. Most foreigners need this permit before studying in Canada. You can apply for a study permit before or after entering Canada, depending on individual circumstances and timing. If you require a visa/eTA to enter Canada, you must have a visa/eTA upon entry. When applying for a study permit, if IRCC approves your application, you will be issued a visa to enter Canada.

How long can you stay in Canada with a study permit?

A study permit is usually valid for the length of your study program, plus an extra 90 days. The 90 days let you prepare to leave Canada or apply to extend your stay.
You can study in Canada if you:

  • accepted into Designated Learning Institutes (DLI) - Please note that all primary and secondary schools in Canada are all designated so they won't be able found in the list of Designated Learning Institutes.
  • prove you have enough money to pay for your: tuition, living expense for yourself and family members who accompanied you to Canada and round trip tickets for yourself and your family
  • law-abiding and have no criminal record (provide police certificates when required)
  • in good health and perform health check (when required)
  • prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires

About Student Direct Stream (SDS)

As you may know, Canada is a dream destination for many international students thanks to its high quality of life and strong, stable economy. However, this also makes obtaining a visa to study in the country extremely challenging.

Specifically, when applying for a regular study visa, you typically need to show that you have $30.000 CAD in your bank account and that either you or your financial sponsor earns no less than 40,000,000 VND per month , along with a range of other documents.

Oh, and if you’re wondering how to prove your financial capacity when studying in Canada under the regular visa stream, check out this article: Studying in Canada with Financial Proof Required, where I’ve explained everything in detail.

Under that pressure, it was a relief when the SDS (Student Direct Stream) program was announced in 2018. This program has significantly reduced the number of complicated procedures and the costs involved for students.

Under the SDS Canada 2022, you no longer need to spend time preparing financial proof documents. However, instead, international students are required to pay the full cost of one academic year in advance and purchase a GIC from Scotiabank amount at $10.000 CAD.

However, this is just the tip of the iceberg, as opportunities often come with challenges, and the visa refusal rate under the SDS category is significantly higher compared to other previously available options.

Study in Canada – Financial Proof Stream

There are two main pathways to study in Canada: the SDS stream, which does not require financial proof, and the regular visa stream, which does. So, if you’re planning to study in Canada under the regular visa stream, you will still need to demonstrate financial capacity.

First, it’s important to understand why the Canadian government strictly monitors financial proof in student visa applications—especially for applicants from developing countries like Vietnam.

1. The most important financial proof documents

Here, the Canadian government will require you to present two basic and most reliable types of financial proof documents: a bank savings passbook and the tax declaration and income receipts of your financial sponsor.

Savings book

This will be the source to cover your living expenses and tuition fees during your first semesters in Canada. Depending on your place of residence, university, and chosen major, the required deposit amount may vary.

For example, if you study at major universities like the University of Toronto or the University of British Columbia, the required savings amount will be higher.

Meanwhile, tuition and living costs at colleges in suburban areas tend to be somewhat lower. However, regardless of which school you attend or where you settle, you should plan to have between 500 million and 600 million VND or more in your savings account.

To avoid any last-minute problems before enrollment, you should open your savings account between 6 months and 1 year before submitting your application. During this time, the Consulate may decide that your account does not meet the minimum required deposit.

Demonstrating the financial sponsor’s monthly income

One of the key requirements for studying in Canada under the financial proof stream is providing documents and receipts that prove the monthly income of your financial sponsor.

This income is the main source for your monthly living expenses, and the Canadian government needs to be sure that your parents or guardian can meet these financial needs.

The minimum income requirement varies from year to year, but in recent years, it has generally never been less than 40 million VND per month. The Consulate will ask for the following documents to supplement your financial proof:

  • For salaried employees such as office workers or government staff: a confirmation letter from the employer verifying the position, title, salary, and a declaration of total monthly income.
  • For business owners and household businesses: business licenses, recent contracts, tax receipts, and a statement of total income.
  • For property landlords: rental contracts specifying the exact monthly rent, payment dates, and contract duration.
  • For sponsors or guarantors in Canada: similar documents as above, plus proof of employment contract, job title, salary and bonus declarations, total income for the past two years, tax receipts, bank statements, and a sponsorship letter clearly stating their responsibilities toward the student.

Please note that parents or sponsors should prepare fully authenticated and reputable documents, as well as open bank accounts well in advance to avoid unnecessary delays in visa processing.

Additionally, some business owners lacking tax receipts may face difficulties during the application preparation process.

2. What documents are included in the financial proof to study in Canada?

In summary, you will need to prepare the following documents to complete your financial proof application before studying in Canada:

  • A savings passbook with a deposit of at least 600 million VND
  • Bank statements proving the deposit amount over the last 2 months
  • Documents proving the monthly income of your financial sponsor, including: employment contract, salary and bonus declarations, company confirmation of monthly salary transfer, personal income tax receipts, etc.
  • Valid documents proving ownership of fixed assets such as land use rights certificates (sổ đỏ), vehicle registration papers, etc.

If your sponsor is residing in Canada, you should notify them to prepare a sponsorship letter, documents proving your family relationship, bank account balance or savings fund, documents proving ownership of fixed assets, copies of citizen ID cards, and so on.

However, preparing the financial proof documents is only one part of the requirements for studying in Canada.

Although this pathway does not require language proficiency or prepayment of tuition and living expenses, to achieve better results in your studies, you should still prepare a good level of English, especially in communication.

3. Where to submit the application and how long does it take to get results?

The financial proof documents are only part of the larger student visa application. Besides these documents, you need to prepare your personal identification papers, visa application forms, and admission documents. To submit your financial proof application, there are two options: online submission or in person at the Canada Visa Application Center (CVAC) offices in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.

For in-person submission, you will submit your financial proof documents along with your student visa application at the CVAC office here. Results are usually returned within 40 to 60 working days from the date CVAC receives your application.

For online submission, the steps to apply for a Canadian study visa under the financial proof stream are as follows:

  • Visit the official Canadian government website and create an account
  • Complete the questionnaire to confirm the type of visa you need
  • Fill out the information forms
  • Download the forms, complete the declarations, and upload them
  • Pay the application fee
  • Wait for the appointment date to provide biometric information and for the visa result

Medical exams and police certificates

Depending on where you’re applying from, you may need to get a medical exam or police certificate. To get faster processing through the Student Direct Stream, you must include these with your application (if you need them). If you don’t, they won’t process your application faster.
