Canada's First Express Entry Draw for Education Sector

On May 1, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issued 1,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in the first draw specifically for education workers through the Express Entry system.

To be considered in this round, candidates must meet the following conditions:

  • Have a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 479.
  • Create an Express Entry profile by 10:35 a.m. UTC on August 10, 2024.

This is the first time Canada has conducted a separate draw by education sector since announcing the new sector in February 2025. It is also the first draw following Canada's recent general election.

Express Entry System Explained

Express Entry is Canada’s economic immigration application management system, which is used to select candidates with skills, education and work experience. It is not a separate immigration program, but a platform for submitting applications for the following programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class
  • Provincial Nominee Program

Each candidate is assigned a CRS score based on a number of factors, including age, education, work experience, language ability (English or French), and additional factors such as a relative in Canada or a provincial nomination.

Do I need to hire a lawyer when receiving an ITA through Express Entry?

Hiring an immigration attorney is optional, but can bring many benefits, especially if you:

  • Unfamiliar with the immigration application process
  • Have a CRS score that is not too high and want to optimize the score
  • Concerns about the ability to file accurately

An experienced immigration attorney can assist you with:

  • Choose the right immigration program that suits your profile
  • Plan and prepare a complete and strategic profile
  • Avoid errors or omissions that may result in application rejection or a bar from re-application.
  • Resolve issues that arise during the review process

The biggest benefit of working with an attorney is not just filling out the paperwork for you, but the personalized advice tailored to your specific situation.

If you work in education, health care, or have a good command of French, now is a good time to consider applying for Canadian immigration through Express Entry.
