How To Prepare For Your Canadian Citizenship Interview

This interview is not mandatory for all applications, but if required, you need to prepare thoroughly to answer confidently and accurately.

1. When is the citizenship interview held and why is it required?

Thông thường, phỏng vấn quốc tịch diễn ra sau khi ứng viên đã vượt qua bài kiểm tra quốc tịch (citizenship test) và gần đến giai đoạn cuối của quy trình xét hồ sơ.

IRCC may request an interview when:

  • Need to clarify information in the profile.
  • Have doubts or need to verify some details about your residence history, permanent resident (PR) records or personal information.

Interviews are usually conducted face-to-face with an immigration officer.

2. How to prepare for a citizenship interview

2.1. Review your profile carefully

  • Review all citizenship applications and, if applicable, permanent residency (PR) applications.
  • Make sure you understand all the information you have declared.
  • Be prepared to explain or provide reasons for any discrepancies from the information IRCC has.

Note: All information provided must be truthful and accurate. False statements may result in rejection of the application and a long-term ban on re-application.

2.2. Prepare additional documents

Bring supporting documents to substantiate the information provided in your application. Some examples:

What IRCC may ask Supporting documents
Residence history Rental agreement or home ownership documents (translated into English/French if needed), airline tickets, hotel reservation history
Permanent Resident (PR) Application Submitted PR application, Invitation to Apply (ITA), correspondence with IRCC, tax returns related to time spent in Canada
Current nationality Certificate of nationality (if any), documents proving parents' nationality

2.3. Consider hiring a legal representative

You have the right to hire an immigration attorney or licensed immigration consultant to assist you in the preparation process.

While they can't answer for you in the interview, they can:

  • Explain the interview process.
  • Help you understand your rights and obligations.
  • Anticipate and practice possible questions.
  • Helps you feel more confident when entering the interview.

Because citizenship applications are so crucial, many applicants choose to have expert assistance to reduce risk.

3. Conclusion

The citizenship interview can be nerve-wracking, but with proper preparation, you can have a smooth experience. Know your application, bring all supporting documentation, and consider the assistance of an immigration professional to ensure your application goes smoothly.
