Lena Metlege Diab – The New Face Leading Canadian Immigration: Combining Courage, Empathy and Vision
A new chapter has opened for Canada's immigration industry as Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a new cabinet with the participation of two MPs from Nova Scotia: Ms. Lena Metlege Diab and Mr. Sean Fraser.
Lena Metlege Diab, Member of Parliament for Halifax West, has been appointed as Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. This is great news not only because of her important role, but also because of the person and journey she has inspired millions of immigrants.

Born into a family of Lebanese descent, Ms. Diab has a deep understanding of the immigrant experience – from the initial challenges to the aspirations of a foreign land. She served as Nova Scotia’s first female Attorney General and has held numerous provincial cabinet roles. She now brings a combination of strong legal expertise, policy experience, and empathy from her own life journey.
Meanwhile, Sean Fraser, MP for Central Nova, has been appointed as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, as well as Minister of the Atlantic Opportunities Agency. He previously served as Minister of Immigration and Minister of Housing in the Trudeau government, and will continue to play a key role under Prime Minister Carney.
Ms. Diab and Mr. Fraser were two of 28 cabinet members who were sworn in at Rideau Hall in Ottawa on Tuesday.
Notably, Kody Blois, MP for Kings-Hants, who previously served as Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Economic Development, is no longer in the cabinet. This position will be taken over by Heath MacDonald, MP for Prince Edward Island. In addition, Joanne Thompson (Newfoundland and Labrador) will continue to serve as Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard.
A new ray of hope for the immigration industry
As an expert in the immigration field, TTN immigration feels hopeful knowing that Ms. Lena Diab will be the one to steer the national immigration policy in the coming time.
Her presence is not only symbolic, but also represents a real step forward in a humane and strategic approach to immigration – an area that has always been associated with real-life stories, waiting, and big dreams.
I am confident that under her leadership, Canada can expect:
- Policy closer to immigrant reality, understanding and acting faster on outstanding issues
- Prioritize family reunification and humanitarian decisions
- Developing a smart settlement roadmap, connecting labor market needs with global human resources
- A people-centered immigration system that puts the heart into every decision
Canada was built by immigrants – and now, it is being shaped by leaders like Lena Diab, who is proof that an immigration system can be run with both heart and vision.
We wish you success on this new journey. We are watching – with faith, with expectation, and with confidence that good things will come.
