First Fall in Canada: What you shouldn’t miss!

Fall in Canada is a cozy and inviting season, with cooler temperatures, vibrant autumn leaves, exciting holidays, and plenty of fun outdoor activities. If you're new to Canada, this is the perfect time to immerse yourself in all that the country has to offer. Here's what you need to know to fully enjoy the season!

When does fall in Canada start?

In Canada, fall usually spans from September to December, but there's a specific day known as the "first day of fall." As explained by the National Research Council Canada, "fall officially begins when the sun crosses the equator from north to south, marking the autumnal equinox."

In 2024, this moment will occur on September 22.

What to expect during fall in Canada?

Shorter days and an end to Daylight Savings

Things to do during fall in Canada

Enjoy fall foliage

One of the highlights of fall is the vibrant change in leaf colors. There are numerous spots to witness this natural beauty, with hikes and treks in national parks being particularly popular.

Notable locations to see stunning fall foliage in Canada include Algonquin Park in Ontario, Parc national du Mont-Tremblant in Quebec, and Stanley Park in Vancouver. Additionally, some parks and provinces offer fall foliage trackers that provide updates on the changing colors, helping you to fully enjoy the season.

Try fun fall activities

With the crisp fall air setting in, it's an ideal time for outdoor fun. Beyond hiking and trekking to admire the fall foliage, many farms across Canada offer exciting events for families and friends. Activities like corn mazes, hayrides, apple picking, and pumpkin picking are quintessential fall experiences. Additionally, renting a cottage in a rural area to enjoy quality time with loved ones is a popular choice.

Savour fall flavours

Autumn is the perfect season for comforting foods. Pumpkin and apple pies are especially popular, and many coffee shops and bakeries feature seasonal pumpkin-spiced pastries and drinks.

Festivals that take place during fall in Canada

Thanksgiving

Canada also celebrates Thanksgiving, but with some notable differences from the U.S. Canadian Thanksgiving is observed on the second Monday of October, which is about a month and a half earlier than the U.S. holiday. It’s a wonderful time to gather with family and friends for a hearty meal. Traditional dishes often include turkey, stuffing, and vegetables, though many people add their own twists to the feast. This year, Canadian Thanksgiving will be celebrated on October 14.

Halloween

Halloween, celebrated on October 31 each year, is a widely loved holiday in Canada. In the weeks leading up to the event, you'll find a variety of spooky activities, from scary movie marathons to jack-o'-lantern carving competitions. Many people decorate their homes and lawns with costumes, pumpkins, and other eerie Halloween decor. On Halloween night, trick-or-treating is a favorite tradition, with children dressing up in costumes and going door to door to collect candy from neighbors. For adults, Halloween parties and haunted houses offer fun ways to celebrate, often involving costumes and themed festivities.

Black Friday

Black Friday, originally a major shopping event in the U.S. held the first Friday after Thanksgiving, has also become popular in Canada. Traditionally marking the start of the holiday season, it features significant sales and discounts from retailers to simplify holiday shopping for loved ones. In Canada, Black Friday occurs around the same time, but many retailers start offering sales and discounts a week or two earlier.

Cyber Monday

The Monday following Black Friday is known as Cyber Monday, and it emphasizes online sales and discounts, allowing everyone to snag deals from the comfort of their own homes. If you have any significant purchases planned—whether electronics, household appliances, or furniture—it might be worth holding off until Cyber Monday to take advantage of the latest offers.
