FAMILY CLASS SPONSORSHIP

Minimum Necessary Income for Family Sponsorship
(Mininum Necessary Income/MNI)

In order to support family members through sponsorship, you need to demonstrate that you make enough income to meet the minimum requirement. This implies having adequate financial resources to provide for all those you are responsible for. The specific income threshold varies based on factors such as the number of family members being supported in Canada, the quantity of individuals being sponsored, and whether the sponsor resides in Canada or Quebec.

What is the "Minimum Necessary Income" or MNI?

To be eligible for certain family sponsorship programs, sponsors must have a minimum income level to support themselves, their family unit, and the individuals they intend to sponsor. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada utilize "Minimum Necessary Income" (MNI) thresholds to evaluate the sponsor's financial capacity to support their family members. Prospective family sponsorship candidates will only qualify to sponsor their relatives if they can meet the MNI criteria tailored to their family size.

Who is included in family size unit? Who is included in family size unit?

  • Yourself
  • Your spouse or partner
  • Your dependent children
  • Your spouse’s or partner’s dependent children
  • Any other person you previously sponsored in the past and for whom you’re still financially responsible
  • The parents and grandparents you want to sponsor
  • Your parents and grandparents spouse, partner and dependent children

In addition, dependent children, a spouse, common-law partner or divorced partner who will not accompany their parents or grandparents to Canada will also be included.

MNI for Parents and Grandparents Program Sponsorship

For sponsorship of parents and grandparents, the sponsor in Canada must surpass the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for three consecutive taxation years (excluding Quebec). This criterion ensures sponsors are financially prepared for the obligations associated with caring for elderly relatives.

Sponsors for the 2023 Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship program must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) requirements set by IRCC. Below are the MNI figures for individuals living in Canada (excluding Quebec) and outside the Province of Quebec in 2023.

MNI for Family Sponsorship in Quebec

Sponsors residing in Quebec are subject to distinct income requirements. They are considered capable of meeting the requirement if, over the past 12 months and throughout their sponsorship commitment, they have received gross income from Canadian sources equivalent to the combined total of the income listed in both Table 1 and Table 2 below. The income figures in both tables are adjusted annually.

These amounts are applicable from January 1 to December 31, 2023.
